Bionics is a Brazilian produced Netflix movie featuring a very talented cast directed by the brilliant Afonso Poyart and VFX done by Picma Post, which pushed the quality of Brazilian productions by doing top shelf work. I was fortunate to work with them designing the prosthetic limbs for various characters.
Maria’s Leg
Played by the very talented actress Jessica Córes, Maria loses her leg in an accident and gets a bionic prosthetic leg which allows her to compete in a new kind of athletic competition:
Internal Details
Before using the actress 3D Scan model, I explored a lower leg joint setup. I removed the outer shells to show the muscle pistons and internal details:
Concept Exploration
Before going into the more in-depth 3D design, I did a quick design round to explore the look of the prosthetic leg. I did a model in Zbrush and painted over in Photoshop. After the director’s approval I went into 3DSMax to model the more detailed design, using my ZBrush model as a base:
Gabi’s Prosthetic Leg
Gabi is Maria’s sister and played by the very talented Gabrielly Nunes. She got a bionic implant before Maria, and she became the top athlete, until Maria got her implant and started to raise in the ranks. I used the actress 3D Scan geometry to adjust the design to her real proportions:
Miudo’s Arm
Miudo, the character played by the talented Klebber Toledo, uses his bionic implant to break into a vault and steals diamonds:
Concept Exploration
I wanted o to explore a few different versions to give more options to the director Afonso Poyart, so I did three quick block outs and painted over in Photoshop to indicate the details:
Safe boxes
When Miudo got into the vault, he opened three separated safe boxes. Each one contained a different part of his bionic prosthetic (Shoulder/Biceps, Forearm and Hand). After assembling it, he attacked the bank employee and broke into the safe that contained the diamonds:
Gustavo’s Bionic Prosthetics
The character Gus, played by the super talented Christian Malheiros got into a bad accident at the end of the movie. I was tasked with designing his prosthetic arm, legs and the right portion of his face:
Concept Exploration
similar to the other 3D designs I did for this show, I did a ZBrush sculpt to explore the design and once I got to a point which I felt it capture the director’s vision, I took to Photoshop to add more details:
